My son wants to be a professional footballer. I'm fully in support, so I buy him all he needs from time to time.
My wife however is not in support. She wants him to do something more "productive", and this is beginning to affect our marriage.

Well, sincerely, if He really wants to be a footballer, he needs to start early and you should have a plan for him.
Whatever the case maybe, please ensure his academics does not suffer. He should do well in his school work and play football. If there is balance, then there shouldnt be any disharmony.
As he grows, the decision making will be obvious.
