My frank talk to wives continues from our text in 1 Pet 3 in the AMPC, my emphasis is on verse 2.
IN LIKE manner, you married women, be submissive to your own husbands [subordinate yourselves as being secondary to and dependent on them, and adapt yourselves to them], so that even if any do not obey the Word [of God], they may be won over not by discussion but by the [godly] lives of their wives, When they observe the pure and modest way in which you conduct yourselves, together with your reverence [for your husband; you are to feel for him all that reverence includes: to respect, defer to, revere him–to honor, esteem, appreciate, prize, and, in the human sense, to adore him, that is, to admire, praise, be devoted to, deeply love, and enjoy your husband]. Let not yours be the [merely] external adorning with [elaborate] interweaving and knotting of the hair, the wearing of jewelry, or changes of clothes; But let it be the inward adorning and beauty of the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, which [is not anxious or wrought up, but] is very precious in the sight of God. For it was thus that the pious women of old who hoped in God were [accustomed] to beautify themselves and were submissive to their husbands [adapting themselves to them as themselves secondary and dependent upon them].
1 Peter 3:1-5 AMPC
Peter explains to wives that their conversations or behaviors should be marked by all that shows reverence to their husbands. In order words, everything they do or say should always show respect.
They should change their value system. Rom 12:1-2 talks about being renewed in their minds. They should replace the old mindset with a new one that carries reverence or respect.
Peter goes on to share all of the creative ways to reverence your husband. Respect and reverence must first be in your thoughts before it overflows in your words and actions.
Every wife should find ways to defer to and revere their husbands which in essence is to honor, esteem, appreciate, prize, adore which is to admire, praise, be devoted to, deeply love, and enjoy their husband.
It should be every wife's aim to excel in doing all these. Most wives stumble into doing some of these but the Hunan nature raises up most times to oppose these godly characters and screams vengeance especially when the husband is not loving and caring for them.
This is an instruction to married women which is not dependent on what the husbands do or not.
All these are more of attitudes than actions.
Which husband will a wife that treats him in these ways not go out of his way to be good to her?
Apostle Peter was actually giving wives a tool to make their husbands love them and treat them right.
May God give us more understanding in Jesus mighty name.
God bless our marriage.
