One cannot under or over emphasize the place of the heart condition in our relationship with our spouse and ultimately in our relationship with God. Trying to be a good man to one’s spouse will never enough if the heart test is not passed, gleaning from scriptural wisdom the bible revealed in
Luke 6:45 A good person brings good out of the treasure of good things in HIS HEART; a bad person brings bad out of his treasure of bad things. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
The focal point of concern for us should be our heart at all times, for as long as we can maintain our heart to be good, then we can have the right base or foundation of operation for other principles that will make our marriage work.
Beneath are different types of heart conditions that will not and cannot help us have a Godly marriage:
1. The Deceitful Heart
Jer 17:9(ERV) ”Nothing can hide its evil as well as the human mind. It can be very sick, and no one really understands it.
The scriptures reveal the capacity of the heart to hide its own evil. In an actual sense, this explains the ability of the heart to deceive its own self, e.g. when one cannot confront oneself of thoughts and acts that are not in line with the basic principles of a successful marriage.
A deceitful heart will make a man harbor thoughts of adultery and not genuinely confronts it but hide under the guise of it being just a stray thought till such thoughts consume the heart and lead to the manifestation of an adulterous act.
The dangerous part of this type of heart is that it does not elude the status of being a Christian, rather it only submits to the leading of the Holy-Spirit.
2. A Foolish Heart
Ecc 10:2 A wise person's heart leads the right way. The heart of a fool leads the wrong way.
There is such heart as a foolish heart. Being saved does not automatically make the heart wise but it takes exposure to Gods word (light in God’s word to bring about wisdom in the heart)
Psalm 51:6 (KJV) Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the HIDDEN PART, THOU SHALT MAKE ME TO KNOW WISDOM.
It is possible to know wisdom in the inward part and the only person that can make us know wisdom in the inward part in this age is the Holy Spirit of God but it is necessary that we come to the realization that when we keep doing the wrong things, we need to consider if we are not deceiving ourselves then learn wisdom from the holy spirit.
An example of a foolish heart in the scriptures is Nabal the husband of Abigail. Such a man with a foolish heart can wreck himself and at the same time, bring destruction to his family. Receive Grace to have a wise heart in Jesus name
3. The Wary or Failing Heart
The failing heart is the heart that cannot stay in it to win. This type of heart will always feel unworthy or immature to face life or marital challenges and will always lean on the strength of one’s spouse to get things done.
We will have to open up genuinely to the spirit of God to confess the state of our heart to him and to always lean on the ability of the holy spirit to make us operate from the point of a right heart.
This is necessary for God's operation in our lives.
