I was seeing a funny skit on social media where a young man presented himself to a lady's mentor with the hope of seeking his permission to ask for her hand in marriage. The following conversation ensued between them.
Mentor: I really like you. You look sharp and smart. So tell me, what do you do?
Young man: Nothing sir
Mentor: I don't understand. I mean what do you do for a living?
Young man: Nothing really sir.
Mentor: Oh ok. What are you engaged in presently at the moment?
Young man: Nothing sir
Mentor: Interesting! Any volunteering? Any social services? What about ministry? What do you think God is calling you to do in your generation?
Young man: Errm, actually sir, at the moment, I am still trusting God to know exactly what His mind for me is. So I don't just want to dabble into anything yet.
Mentor: Hmmm...I see. So why do you want to marry my daughter?
Young man: (smiling) I like that she is focused, God-fearing, knows what she wants and she will really help me to be stable in life and destiny.
Mentor: And have you spoken to her yet?
Young man: Not yet sir. I wanted to inform you first.
Mentor: Ok let's pray. Father, thank you for delivering my daughter from the hands of this irresponsible man. Thank you because you have exposed the devil made flesh and she will never be a victim of human error. And I pray for this young man, even though he is presently totally clueless on why exactly he is existing, enlighten the eyes of his understanding, amen!
Young man, thank you very much. Have a great day.
1st Samuel 11:1 & 2 (ICB) In the spring the kings would go out to war. So in the spring David sent out Joab, his servants and all the Israelites. They destroyed the Ammonites and attacked the city of Rabbah. But David stayed in Jerusalem. One evening David got up from his bed. He walked around on the roof of his palace. While he was on the roof, he saw a woman bathing. She was very beautiful
King David would have saved himself a lot of stress if he was at his duty post as and when due. Immorality thrives on the premise of idleness most times. Secrecy is the other premise on which immorality thrives.
You can't be saying you want to get married with no iota of direction. As in, you just want to get married because everyone is doing it? Or you are just cool with going in and out of relationships with no definite structure?
Young man, please be gainfully employed. It doesn't have to be a white-collar job but be committed to something. At least be useful to God and to yourself.
Young woman, have a vision for your life too. It's not only a man that has to do that. Don't just be tossed here and there like the wind. Know the kind of people you absolutely cannot have anything to do with. Not because they are bad, but because you are not going in the same direction.
For those in a relationship, know what you are doing. Be available and committed to one another under God. Uriah took his relationship with levity that was why David could mess up with it.
There was a reason you came together in the first place...let your convictions guide and see you through. Relationship is work so do the work!
