The sun was blazingly hot. It wasn’t friendly at all. It was that kind of sun rays that penetrated both the shadow and the owner of the shadow.
As Betsy, (so she’s called, her real name is Bidemi) approached the building with the golden gate, she thought happily in anticipation that her golden moment is finally here.
She has made it to the final interview for a job opportunity in a blue-chip company. Even though the sun rays were uncooperative, she knew she must not allow her gait and confidence to be broken. She has prepared for this day all her life.
The journey began with over three thousand of them. After scaling fences and barbed wires, she is here.
A rush of contradictory emotions filled her. Happy because she is almost making it. Indifferent because she has one more hurdle to cross. A little unhappy because she has a bad feeling in her gut about the whole thing.
“Devil, I bind you in Jesus name!”
Some minutes after, she was there before the CEO himself. Nothing much. Simple process. The CEO observed her more than asking questions.
“You may proceed to the next room for your employment letter!”
She couldn’t believe her ears! Really! Was it a dream?
As she waited in the room, obviously with the secretary, she thought of how the huge salary will make a lot of difference in her life and in the life of her family.
Her mum has suffered a lot financially. She lost her dad in an inferno that consumed him in his village.
Her siblings, four of them, oh how happy she was.
“There is one more thing you need to know”
“I am all ears ma’am.”
You will need to be with the CEO tomorrow night and all through this weekend for the final briefing. Prepare to spend the nights.
The alarm did not ring, it blasted off in her head.
“You said what?” Betsy is obviously unsettled.
“Every employee has to go through that orientation.” The secretary explained.
“Why do I need to spend the night ma?”
“You will find out when you get there.”
“Sorry ma, is it all of us just employed or me alone with the CEO?”
“You alone”
“Why ma?”
“Why are you behaving like a baby? Don’t you need this job? Let me advise you. Jobs are hard to find. This is a 12 Million per annum job you are about to throw away with your childishness.”
“Betsy was downcast.” She could read between the lines.
“It’s a privilege you are chosen. You think you think you got to this stage because you are brilliant more than others? Wake up, this is Nigeria.
Betsy stood there, as though in a trance. Confusion enveloped her. Her hands were shaking. Sweat droplets gathered on her forehead, right inside the air-conditioned office.
She has a few minutes to decide. What is she going to do?
Her faith was under intense trial. Mammon spirit stood before her resolutely. She needed this job desperately,
To be continued tomorrow.
